Ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy attended the group’s concert on March 4 at the Beacon Theater in New York City. It was the first time portnoy saw his former bandmates perform live since leaving the iconic progressive metal outfit over 11 years ago.
According to DREAM THEATER fans who attended the show, singer james la brie gave portnoy a shoutout from the stage and Mike waved. Several fans also took pictures of portnoy on site, with Mike and his wife reportedly watched the performance from near the Beacon Theater soundboard.
the next day, portnoy shared some backstage photos from the concert and added the following message: “After 36 years I finally got my first DREAM THEATER performance last night! It was a great evening and it was a pleasure to spend time with my old friends again.”
Asked in a new interview with The edge of the razor what it was like for him and his bandmates to see portnoy at the concert in New York, DREAM THEATER keyboardist Jordan Rudess said, “I’m so glad he [came out]† How cool to see a DREAM THEATER show — something I’m never allowed to do… So I thought it was probably pretty cool for Mike see DREAM THEATER† And it was really nice of him to come out and I think it was great that he also healed the dynamic with everyone. Yes, it was amazing.”
As for his personal relationship with portnoy† rudeness said: “Mike and I will continue to work together. We did it LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT not too long ago, and we had a great time doing it. It was almost like we never skipped a bit. So he and I are friends, and we just kept our relationship going.
earlier in the month, labrie told Sonic Perspectives it was “great” to reconnect with portnoy on the show in New York. “The point is that you get to a point in life where you have to… You can’t carry that with you. Don’t carry hate with you; don’t carry negativity with you.” labrie said. “We’ve carried it around for far too long as far as I’m concerned, and it served no purpose; it only served divisiveness. It was very divisive and very damaging.
“So it’s great to be back,” James added. “We talk to each other, we chat and all that stuff. And that’s the kind of world I want to live in, as opposed to negativity, hate and frickin’… It’s just not worth it. It’s not worth it.”

I’m very happy with all the eighty-seven bands I’ve got but i would do it for the fans cause i’m a very sentimental person and i have a lot of good, good memories of those guys and the time i’m a sentimental man so really the ball is in their court honestly said. [But] if you ask me the odds [of a reunion happening]”I’d say don’t bet on it because I know their personalities too and I don’t think they’re the back-looking type.”
